A recent article in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, focusing on global energy policy, reaches a surprising conclusion: the main strategic beneficiary of the war in the Middle East initiated by the Trump administration may well be China.
At first glance, this seems paradoxical. China is the world’s largest importer of oil and would therefore appear to be among the countries most vulnerable to instability in the region. In reality, however, Beijing has weathered the energy shock far better than expected, thanks to a combination of large strategic reserves, the growing electrification of its economy, and, above all, an unprecedented expansion of renewable energy.
