One argument recurs in the debate over the war in Ukraine: resistance to the Russian invasion is said to be the equivalent of the Italian Resistance, and supporting it through arms deliveries would therefore be an obligation for anyone who identifies with anti-fascism. But a historical analogy cannot substitute for political reasoning. Recognising Ukrainians’ right to defend themselves does not mean regarding every Western military decision as necessary, effective, or without alternatives. Between solidarity with a population under attack and endorsement of a military strategy, there is room for debate that no appeal to historical memory should foreclose.
